Publisher Spotlight: LeRue Press

LRP Business CenterWe love living in Reno, partly because of all the great writing resources here. One of the resources we are lucky to have is LeRue Press. Every writer in the area should know more about them, which is why we conducted the following interview with them.

 1. What kind of books do you publish?

We publish all genres of books. We provide self-publishing services to all authors seeking publication. Authors maintain 100% of the rights to their books. We also publish traditionally with an author contract that gives us the right to publish and the author receives royalties.

 2. Why should authors choose LeRue to publish their books?

LeRue Press (LRP) has been publishing since 2000 and is focused on quality and innovation. We focus on opportunities that arise through development of new media as well as new trends and publishing models. LRP is also committed to providing the best possible service. Authors who publish with LRP are provided options and encouraged to understand their market prior to printing or distributing their book. We offer support before, during and after the publication of a book.

When an author seeks a publisher, they often find “packages.” We pride ourselves on our ability to offer an author what they need, not what the package dictates.

3. Does LeRue help with the distribution/marketing process?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is, “It depends.” We recommend an author have a written budget and book marketing plan. If they don’t, we can help them create one, but of course, that costs money. By having the plan, we can assist in determining the direction/markets that are appropriate for each author.

We have standard and à la carte options for marketing assistance. We can design and produce bookmarks, posters and other promotional products. LRP also has a number of events, both public and private, that we produce frequently. Our radio show, The Book Hound, is a great place for authors to “wag and brag’” about their books. We air on a number of stations and have podcasts available.

We offer assistance in the distribution process as well. We consign books in our store and contract with some authors to handle distribution for them. This is on a case-by-case basis. We can warehouse the books and ship as needed.

4. What do you charge for book publishing?

Publishing a book is a process. The condition of the book and the needs of the author will drive the pricing. When the client comes in, we do a consultation and determine at what point they are and what services they need. We need to know the quantities they require and what their drop-dead date for publication is. It’s always better for the customer if they have longer lead times to allow for unknown delays that may occur. We provide a quick questionnaire on our website to help authors know what they need to get a quote.

5. How long does it take to get a book published through LeRue?

Timelines are determined by the needs of the author and whether it’s traditionally or self-published. The condition of the book at the time we begin working with an author and production schedules will help create the timeline. From the time of final proof, it can take from seven days to six weeks, depending on the type of book, hard cover or soft cover, and the process the author has chosen.

6. Is there anything else people should know about LeRue?

Printing is in our blood. We adopted our parents’ company name (LeRue, not French, but a combination of their names Le for Leonard and Rue for Ruby). They owned a small printing company for many years. We are a family business and know how to work with many different types of people. Books are personal and require a gentle but firm approach to get them effectively to market. We spend a lot of time and effort to produce a quality product that is unique to each customer and/or author. We are passionate about our work and enjoy every day we are there.

We offer a full service writing and business center in our Greg Street location. Business services include: answering phones, receiving mail, virtual office, conference room rental, and writing and business workshops. We print, publish and sell books, and provide promotional products as well.
