Getting out of a Writing Rut

There are times when your writing is not living up to your standards and you aren’t sure how to fix it. It happens to the best of us, so don’t be too worried; just make sure you do something about it. Below are some tips to help you out of your writing rut.

Choose a different genre. If you typically write in one particular genre, try stepping outside your comfort zone by writing in a different genre. Even if the writing does not turn out well, the change may help you to think a different way and improve the genre in which you normally write.

Change your writing schedule. Writing in the mornings might not be working for you anymore, so write in the evenings instead. Also, consider writing for different durations. If you normally write for an hour at a time write in half hour intervals.

Rethink your writing environment. The writing area that has been perfect for you for so long might be holding you back now. Either rearrange your current writing area or pick a new one entirely. The change of scenery could be just the thing your mind needs.

Hopefully these tips will get you out of your writing rut, but remember the most important thing is to keep writing.

I am very pleased with the work you've done on my book.  Your suggestions and corrections were spot-on and you took my lumps of words and smoothed them out in to a what now reads as a polished and certainly more fluid piece. I wish you and Pypeline much success and do see a busy future for the two of you. I am working on other projects and will no doubt call on you again for help.  ”
