Sentenced to Write!

imagesAs a writer, there is always room for improvement. A great way to improve your writing is to work on your sentence structure.

Sentence Variation-One way to keep readers engaged is to vary the lengths of your sentences. Readers will get bored if all your sentences are the same length. Switch things up by varying long sentences with short sentences, so your writing will flow better.

Sentence Fragments-Nope. Not a good idea. Sentence fragments are usually a result of lazy writing and they have a negative effect on the readability of your writing. Try to avoid them, especially in professional writing. Sentence fragments are occasionally OK; it is acceptable to use fragments in dialogue and in creative writing, but only when it will have more impact than a normal sentence. Don’t use fragments just because it seems easier.

Run-On Sentences-I love commas and semicolons as much as the next person, but that doesn’t mean you should use them to make never-ending sentences. If you read a sentence out loud and you are out of breath by the end of it, break up that sentence.

Hopefully, these tips will help you create better sentences and therefore improve your writing. Now all you have to do is get to writing!
